Fiona Smith

Fiona has established a sound experience of strategic business planning, corporate governance, change management, employee relations, recruitment and training through senior roles in the private and public sector. Fiona spent the first 10 years of her career in the financial services industry in a range of senior operational management and HR roles, followed by 6 years as Board HR Director and Corporate Governance lead in a healthcare organisation. She is at ease working with corporate Boards and small business; she recognises the need for solutions to be pragmatic, proportionate to the size and resources of the client and, most of all, effective. Fiona brings particular expertise in the challenges of working in the most remote and rural parts of Scotland and the need to design and deliver innovative and practical solutions for clients. The key skills that Fiona brings to assignments are: 

  • A strong strategic and operational understanding of the core human resources and personnel requirements for business including policy development and employment contracts, recruitment, organisational structures, training and development.
  • A strategic thinker with strong analytical skills who can help clients create clarity in complex and unclear situations.
  • A track record of defining and leading complex change, including strong formal project structuring and management skills.
  • A very competent communicator and an experienced facilitator of Board level strategic discussion.
  • Excellent coaching, training and organisational development skills.
  • A depth of knowledge in corporate governance and structuring of Boards to deliver effective buisness results.
  • Sector experience in financial service, health, arts and crafts industry and tourism.
    • Fiona has a BA(Hons) in Business Organisation, a Post Graduate Diploma in Management and is formally trained in the Prince ll project management methodology. She is a Chartered Member Institute of Personnel and Development and an accredited business coach.

      Consultant Partner, Sorton Partners
      March 2011 to present
      Partner in team based consultancy providing practical, professional support to public, private and voluntary sector organisations.

      Director of Human Resource, NHS Orkney
      November 2004 to March 2011
      Executive Director reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, this role focused on the strategic and operational management of all Human Resource services, Organisational Development and Occupational Health.

      Prior to these roles Fiona worked for Standard Life from 1994 to 2004 in a range of business and HR roles, culminating in Group Organisational Development Manager.
